The article offers a synthetic reconstruction of the "state of the art" of the critical literature focused on urban policies aimed at promoting socio-economic mix in disadvantaged areas. The strengths and the weaknesses of these initiatives are explored in the context of the welfare state’s crisis. Considering the peculiarities of a number of cases in Italy, some research questions are proposed. Finally, some perspectives to move beyond the these policies’ critical issues that have been underlined by the international debate are drown.
