In 1903 the Italian explorer Filippo De Filippi and his wife Caroline Fitzgerald went on an aesthetic journey through Russia, the Caucasus and Turkestan, to the discovery of the Orient. The journey resulted in a highly descriptive travel notebook, which depict in the greatest possible detail the life of Russian aristocracy in the years immediately before the Revolution, the Caucasus in turmoil, and what was to become Soviet Turkestan in the last years of the Khanate. De Filippi’s account of his first journey to the Orient, never published before, constitutes a work of unequalled historical and anthropological value.
