The article deals with the analyses, the evaluations and the general attitude of the American press with regard to the Italian economic miracle between 1960 and 1964. The essay develops two different levels of analysis. On the one hand, it provides an analysis of the dynamics of the economic miracle (the factors of growth, the leading sectors, the causes of the crisis) as mirrored in the eyes of the American observers. This perspective also aims at exploring to what extent the perception of the Italian miracle affected the overall image of Italy then widespread in the United States. On the other hand, the essay aims at contributing to the study of American public opinion during the 1960s, inasmuch as it reveals attitudes and perceptions, beliefs and priorities, prejudices and fears widespread in the American public sphere above all with regard to the problem of economic growth and development in the context of the Cold War, but also with regard to the policies of the Kennedy administration towards an European ally and the modernization of a country like Italy. The research is based on documentation from the US Department of State and above all on a vast range of American newspapers and periodicals, selected for circulation, relevance, orientation, and intended audience.
