The purpose of this paper is to examine practices, processes and codifications of legitimacy and illegitimacy that play out and thus, constitute public spaces in Athens at times of socio-political crisis. The paper attempts to identify how the discontinuities, fragmentations and arbitrariness about the future play out in the politics of public space. Considering the various dynamics which form the experience of public spaces in Athens, the article argues that the current neoliberal urban interventions in Athens are part of a wider project to 'reengineer' the state and re-articulate the legitimacy of institutional authorities with references to forthcoming change.
