This article analyzes the concept of erotic transference comparing the elaboration of this by Freud and Perls. It shows that Perls’s concept is connected to the cultural atmosphere of the period, to his character traits and to his eccentric and polyhedral life. It includes the letter that Perls wrote to his client-student-lover Marty. While psychoanalysis favors the phantasmal projection of transference gestalt therapy emphasizes the role of intersubjective relationship, without underestimating the transference.
