The ongoing growth of cities inevitably poses problems of eco-compatibility: from the perspective of sustainable urban development, a return to the compact city seems the only route that can be followed, for several reasons. An urban intensification perspective requires focusing attention on the neighbourhoods: recurring to some concepts from Sampson studies, we stress how Transition Towns can be read in a neighbourhood perspective and how the literature on community resilience presents elements of substantial continuity with the neighbourhood approach.
