This paper proposes a reading of changes in employment based on companies rather than on the involved workers. It is a perspective that, in this time of crisis, seems able to grasp the tensions running through the production system and the forms of workforce’s employment. The analysis is based on the availability of a data archive of enterprises (Silimp) which traces the entry / exit movements of employment. The attention is focused on the manufacturing sector of "Made in Italy" in the Veneto region, observed in five years between the end of 2008 to 2013. Independently from the features of every sector, different patterns arise in terms of employment results. Companies with positive performances are characterized by selecting higher qualification personnel and by using a wider range of contractual forms.
