The ‘great escape’ from Italian Universities: Do labour market recruitment channels matter?

Questo articolo analizza l’impatto di un esteso utilizzo, a livello locale, di canali di assunzione "informali" sulle scelte di iscrizione all’università degli studenti provenienti da famiglie socialmente ed economicamente svantaggiate. Tramite l’applicazione di un modello probit ai microdati dell’Indagine ISTAT sui "Percorsi di studio e di lavoro dei diplomati”" relativa al 2011, l’articolo mostra come i neo-diplomati provenienti dalle famiglie della classe sociale più bassa siano caratterizzati da una minore probabilità di iscriversi ad un percorso di studi universitario se risiedono in provincie in cui la percentuale di individui che dichiara di aver trovato lavoro tramite l’aiuto di amici, parenti e conoscenti è particolarmente elevata. Questi risultati sono coerenti con l’ipotesi che un’ampia diffusione di fenomeni di "favoritismo" nei mercati del lavoro locali generi quello che la letteratura sociologica ed economica definiscono "sentimento di disperazione economica" tra coloro che sanno di non poter contare su reti familiari estese ed efficaci. In tal modo, l’utilizzo eccessivo di canali di assunzione "informali" ridurrebbe l’accumulazione di capitale umano degli individui, contribuirebbe a peggiorare le disuguaglianze nell’accesso all’istruzione superiore e comprometterebbe lo sviluppo socio-economico a livello locale
