The appreciation of the recently deceased Erhard Blankenburg as one of the formative figures of the sociology of law would be incomplete without a look at his position in science policy and sociology of science. With regard to these two aspects Blankenburg can be described as a social engineer engaged in urging social questions. His undeniable merits in this field are associated with an ambivalent position vis à vis a comprehensive and sophisticated sociological theory. Both sides of his scholarly legacy can inspire and motivate current and futures debates in the sociology of law.
