The essay describes the results of a workshop, that was aimed to provide design inputs for the upgrade of public spaces in the neighbourhood of Gagno: a social housing district located in the north of the historic centre of Pisa, built from the 1949 around a unit realized by the ina- Casa Plan. The workshop was seen as an opportunity to deeply reflect on didactic activities, both on their theoretical and experimental issues. It was promoted by the Department of Planning, Design, Technology of Architecture (pdta) of the Sapienza University of Rome with the Municipality of Pisa and the Social Housing Agency of Pisa (apes). This initiative stemmed from the interpretation of the districts of the ‘public city’ as one of the main operational fields for implementing strategies for the regeneration of the contemporary city.
