The article provides an outline of history publishing in Italy from the point of view of a publisher traditionally engaged in this activity. The reasons for a change in the profiles of authors are retraced in different aspects of scholarly work that have lately changed, from tenure track and research evaluation to teaching. Moreover, the article provides some examples of recent editorial successes singling out the methods that historians and publishers both should adopt in order to improve cultural production.
