Highlighting some weaknesses of the current EU asylum system, the refugee crisis raised the need to rethink ways to access protection for people in need. While struggling to find an internal common response, the EU member states have increasingly strengthened their external action also to provide protection to refugees. The article aims at analysing the different aspects of the external dimension of the EU asylum policy. First, it highlights the main challenges of the frequently debated, and for the moment abandoned, proposal of externalising the asylum process. Then, it focuses on the resettlement and the support to third countries hosting refugees as the two main measures in place, which should be further enhanced according to the New European Pact on Migration and Asylum
