November 2020, the Italian government adopted the voluntary front-of-pack labelling scheme, named NutrInform Battery, under article 35 of Reg. (UE) no. 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers. This provision allows the Member States to recommend to food business operators the use of additional forms of expression or presentation of the nutrition declaration, which, by using colours, symbols, or graphic forms that are readily comprehensible, can make nutritional information easier for consumers to understand. In this paper, after presenting the main features of the Italian logo and analysing the Commission opinion on the use of front-of-pack nutritional labelling, the suitability of NutrInform Battery as a harmonised labelling system will be investigated, as well as the potential of this logo to promote healthier and more conscious food choices.
