Recent contributions on the purge in Italy after the Second World War (by Pierluigi Allotti) - ABSTRACT: The purge in the Italian state administration following the Second World War, an issue long neglected by historians, has recently attracted new interest. This article surveys the most recent contributions, which highlight the important work done by the High Commission for Sanctions against Fascism in 1944 and 1945 and thus partly correct the wholly negative evaluation shared by both contemporary witnesses and the historians who in the Seventies and Eighties first studied the issue. The purge was then not a burletta (sham), as Alessandro Galante Garrone once wrote, and its failure was due in the first place to the many clemency acts approved by the Italian Government, starting from the amnesty proposed in 1946 by then Justice Minister and Communist Party leader Palmiro Togliatti.;
