AB -  The problems emerging in the evaluation of scientific research are analyzed focusing on the following main issues: purposes of the evaluation, individual and collective subjects involved, methodologies and objects of the evaluation. Special emphasis is given to the uses and limitations of bibliometry, whose application to individual production should be regarded only as complementary to peer review. The notion and the possible definition of a scientific product are critically discussed.
