Democraticies in Half. Democratic Quality and Autocracy - In a time in history when the third wave of democratization seems to be definitely over, it is useful to update the theoretical and conceptual foundations for analyzing the lines of development in democracy. In this sense, it is particularly relevant to examine the borderline situations between democracy and its opposite, i.e., the numerous hybrid forms of government that exist today in regimes where the fundamental institutions of electoral democracy survive, in an environment lacking minimal conditions of democratic legitimacy. This essay aims to give elements for a critique of the prevailing scientific paradigm, rooted in pluralism, used for conceptualizing these borderline cases. It also suggests a different conceptual outlook on the central dimensions in assessing democratic quality, foremost the discursive dimension of the processes that shape political will.;
