Effetto dell’umanizzazione pittorica sulla percezione delle qualità affettive dell’ambiente in un reparto di pediatria - Effect of pictorial humanization on affective qualities attributed to environment in a Paediatric Unit The Humanization of the hospital environment and, in particular, of the Paediatric Units, represents one of the topics involving enhancement of patients quality of life in hospital, but also of other users such as medical and paramedical staff. This study investigates the effects of an intervention of painting humanization (created with fantasy characters inspired by Walt Disney cartoons) inside a Paediatric Unit of an Italian hospitals. The aim of the study is to test the influence of such a feature of the aesthetic, visuo-spatial humanization on the perception of the affective qualities of the place by young patients’ parents and health professional staff. A total sample of 400 parents and 50 health professional personnel was asked to complete the Scales of the Affective Quality Attributed to Place at two time-points: at first before the pictorial humanization intervention (200 parents and 25 health professionals), and then three months after the humanization intervention has been done (200 parents and 25 health professionals). For what concerned the parents, all the 4 positive affective domains (Relaxing, Exciting, Pleasant, Stimulating) reported significant better scores in the second administration compared to the first one; at the same time, all the 4 negative domains (Distressing, Gloomy, Unpleasant, Sleepy/Boring) showed lower scores in the second administration, confirming a trend of the scales towards the psychologically positive side. For the health professional personnel the environment resulted significantly more Exciting, Pleasant, Stimulating and less Gloomy in the second administration. Key-words: Pictorial humanization, affective qualities of environment, environmental psychology, Paediatric Units.;
