Hostility is a psychosocial factor affecting health and predicts the development of diseases, and unhealthy behaviors and habits. The aim of this study was to present the Italian validation of the Cynical Distrust Scale (CynDis; Julkunen et al., 1994) for the measurement of cynical distrust, the cognitive component of hostility. Despite the extensive literature devoted to this topic, are not yet available in Italy valid, reliable and easy to administer instruments for measuring cynical distrust, which would be suitable for screening and prevention. The CynDis was administered, along with the PANAS, the MCSD-8 and two questions on the perceived health status, to 311 participants (169 females and 142 males, mean age 39.07 years, SD = 14.98). The psychometric properties of the scale were analyzed through exploratory factor analysis, the study of internal consistency and correlations with external criteria. The scale appears to be valid and reliable and is therefore suitable as a screening instrument both in prevention and health promotion contexts.
