This article describes incidents or happenings within the group that seem out of place, incoherent or lacking in logic. These are defined as ‘dramatic moments’. Fictional vignettes are used to illustrate them and to compare the work of Foulkes, the founder of Group Analysis, and Moreno, the founder of Psychodrama, to explore and promote an understanding of these incidents. Group analytic concepts such as the matrix, the group unconscious and mirroring are compared with psychodramatic concepts such as tele, the co-conscious and spontaneity, to explore whether these can inform each other in the understanding of these ‘dramatic moments’.
