This paper analyses one of the most interesting topics characterising contemporary life experience. That is to say the subjective and self made definition of the concept of territory through the current technological forms of communication. Starting from the very concept of map, needing a convenient historical conceptualization, the authors define the cartographical practice as a practice of observation of the territory that whilst creating it, offers the its users a specific gaze, corresponding with an exact sense selection. The authors point out that this classical concept of map must be revised in contemporary society, because of social media and thanks to a reflexive process leading subjects to the construction of their own territorial storytelling, in verbal and visual forms, that is often shared with others. So what is taking place is a social mapping process, varying in different forms given as examples in the paper, that nonetheless links self made with other one’s made.
