After concluding that the most meaningful indicator of economic well-being seems to be household disposable income, the Authors proceeded to describe the parameters used for the calculation on a provincial level. Methods and Results The parameter used by the Authors is, mainly, the provincial distribution of single elements composing regional household disposable income. The meaning and general positioning of these elements are examined. Conclusions Per capita household disposable incomes differ significantly from Centre- North areas to the Southern part of Italy. In the Centre-North the weight of employee compensation prevails, whilst the South is characterized by a higher percentage of social security expenditure.
