The author presents a theoretical and methodological analysis of the fundamental semantics of social relation. After presenting the definition of the subject of fundamental semantics of social relation, provided by the relational sociology of Pierpaolo Donati, the author suggests a strategy for an empirical analysis of this issue, through the social network analysis. The author hypothesizes that the study of the fundamental semantics of social relation contributes to the knowledge of society by achieving results that are equivalent to those obtained through the consideration of the distinct dimensions of social relation. These dimensions of social relation are identifiable using the AGIL scheme, revised in a relational way. This hypothesis was investigated and partly corroborated – the distinct dimensions prove to be a little more effective – through the analysis of relationship between the concepts of social support network and civicness on a sample of individuals residing in Italy.
