Sporting activity is nowadays configured as an essential human right. Here the case of Brazil is dealt with: Brazil is at the centre of world attention for sports mega events of 2014 and 2016. In this context, the realization of Diagnostico Nacional do Esporte e Lazer is a proof of a great attention to sport for all citizens. The Diagnostic strategy is based on the definition of a sports system as an intersection of supply and demand. The demand refers to the citizens’ participation. The supply refers, on the contrary, to several areas: facilities, membership, financial flows, legislation, human resources. In this article the first results obtained in facilities and their infrastructure analysis and in the pilot survey on sport participation in the city of Aracaju are proposed. These findings have led, in particular, to the definition of data collection tools for the national surveys and to the identification of indicators to monitor the dynamics of Brazilian sport in time and space.
