The Frankfurt psychoanalyst Karl Landauer, who died in the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen, is remembered. Landauer, who had been in analysis with Sigmund Freud, was a collaborator and close friend of Max Horkheimer, one of the analysts of Lore and Fritz Perls and an independent and creative thinker. After a brief description of his biography and of the history of the foundation of the Frankfurt Psychoanalytic Institute, some themes of Landauer’s work, that have anticipated aspects of contemporary psychoanalysis and influenced Gestalt therapy, are discussed. These themes are, among others, the following: his soft application of active psychoanalysis, his emphasis on thinking and feeling in an independent way, his close attention to affects and body language (in a way that resembles the later developments of infant research), and a strong interest for social factors.
