L’obiettivo dello studio è quello di verificare il grado di stabilità finanziaria delle banche di credito cooperativo (BCC) rispetto alle banche commerciali. Il lavoro si inquadra all’interno delle ricerche sul rapporto tra stabilità e dimensione della banca, verificando l’impatto sulla rischiosità della banca di un differente modello di business. Utilizzando lo z-score (Roy, 1952; Cihak e Hesse, 2002 e 2008; Beck, 2008), abbiamo analizzato i dati di bilancio delle BCC Italiane dal 2006 al 2011 e confrontato i risultati con quelli delle banche commerciali italiane. Mediante una regressione tra lo z-score ed una serie di fattori bank-specific, l’analisi identifica le potenziali fonti di rischio/opportunità legate alla dimensione della banca ed alle specificità del credito cooperativo. I risultati mostrano che, in accordo con precedenti studi su altre nazioni, le BCC presentano un maggior grado di stabilità finanziaria. In particolare, esse risultano più capitalizzate rispetto alle altre ed investono in maniera ridotta in prodotti derivati, per cui si ritiene possano svolgere un ruolo di stabilizzatori del sistema durante la crisi.;
