Jose Borges’ expedition (September-December 1861) was one of the most followed events of the war for the Mezzogiorno. He became a notorious legitimist foreign fighter sided with Bourbons. The author argues that Borges was the subject of a media campaign having the purpose to make him an emblematic personality of the bourbon legitimism. The Bourbons tried to replicate what the Italians had done with the figure of Garibaldi. The entire project was run by French pro-Bourbon publicists and newspapers, responsible for creating the character of the intrépide Borgès, which in fact had to be the bourbon "Garibaldi". A similar but more ephemeral phenomenon involved the legitimist Rafael Tristany, resembling Borges in life and as a compatriot. If Borges was elevated to hero by the legitimists, for the Italians it represented instead an important communicative weapon, useful to dismantle the bourbon narrative and to attack it at its root.
