It is only in recent times that educational historians have become interested in the fortunes of infant education.

There are still many countries which lack works on the development of this particular aspect, and if by chance some works do exist, they are often not very detailed.

Similarly, we have to point out that there still is no account of the comparative story of infant education.

Therefore, this collection may be of particular interest as it contains the work of an international congress which took place in 1985 with the participation of many scholars from all over Europe.

The writers presented here do not aim to present a complete comparative history of infant education, but they merely hope to take one step in this direction.

In any case we feel that a comparative account of the development of schools and methods of education is of fundamental importance, particularly in the training of teachers, as this promotes and facilitates the formation of opinions critical and averse to every nationalistic tendency.

This also holds true for teachers concerned with preschool education so that they also can draw useful points from having discovered the roots of their profession and understand better the problems they find in their work.

It is for these and all the scholars who are Interested in pedagogy and the history of education that this volume has been written, with the conviction that it will be an important source of Information and will encourage reflection on the recent history of preschool education.
