This essay examines the Dc stance in the face of Charles De Gaulle’s ascent to power in May 1958 just at the time of the political polls that granted Amintore Fanfani the role of Prime Minister. Seeing the risks being run by democracy in France, the Christian democrat establishment confirmed their conviction that only the victory of the catholic party could act as a shield against the perils of ungovernability. The prelude to the centre-left season coincides roughly with the period in which the former general made extensive adjustments to the constitutional framework of the French republic, arousing sharp interest also abroad; in Italy, attention toward Gaullism became for the Dc one of the favorite terms of political comparison between the two countries and a feasible option for contrasting the overture to the Left. Inside the catholic party there was also a perceptive politician like Giorgio La Pira, mayor of Florence and from time immemorial attentive to Mediterranean affairs, who foresaw in De Gaulle the man capable of resolving the problem of Algerian decolonization.
