A lecture given by Gaetano Benedetti (1920-2013) on May 23, 1963, in Milan at a training course on "Psychotherapy of schizophrenic psychoses", organized by the "Milan Group for the Advancement of Psychotherapy" (that later took the name of Psicoterapia e Scienze Umane), is reprinted. Benedetti discusses the dialectic polarities in the psychotherapy of schizophrenia regarding the following seven aspects: time; space; compensatory associations; task and symbolic realization; frankness vs. discretion; closeness vs. distance; authority.
