The author analyzes the issues linked to the purge of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After reviewing the different dynamics followed by Italian diplomacy during the process of defascistization, the author focuses on those Italian diplomats that were sent to West Germany between 1946 and 1953. The essay is based on largely unedited documents from the archive of the Italian Foreign Ministry, the Central State archive and the archive of Auswärtiges Amt in Berlin. The author argues that the attempt to defascistize the Foreign Ministry was largely thwarted, due to a complex series of political and bureaucratic circumstances. The example of the first Italian representatives in the Federal Republic of Germany shows an overwhelming level of continuity of staff.
