The research explores the motivations supporting personal engagement into volunteer activity and the relationships between the motivations, the system of values and the structure of personality. Participants are 104 volunteers who work in different voluntary associations. The instruments used are the Voluntary Function Inventory, the Portrait Values Questionnaire and the Big Five Observer. The results show that the percentage of women who volunteer is higher than men; there is an inverse correlation between age and career oriented utilitarian function; social function is very important to influence volunteering. The results show that the context is essential to promote the involvement in voluntary; on the contrary, values and personality were found non influential.

Keywords: Volunteering, motivations, values, context, personality.
