The article enquires about the possible changes which may have taken place in Italy during the last 20 years concerning the "policies of social times" in Italian cities. The author observes that this argument has become less and less important, to the advantage of new social and political issues such as unemployment, precarious work and insecurity in metropolitan areas. Network society tends now to impose an increasing acceleration of social times and rhythms. In opposition to this, the article proposes a different scenario, by having recourse to three elements: the idea of "chosen rapidity" (or "vitesse choisie"), the practices of slowness in various areas of everyday life and self-limitation. According to the author, the key-question concerns the possibility of stating a kind of time-out of the game which is being played on the playground of the incessant network society.
