The paper focuses on the role of media in the origin and development of environmental participatory movements both in respect to the dynamic of internal socialization and those of creation of civicness at local level. Taking into account the variation of two different dimension - the level of media participation and the level of territorial entrenchment - the authors highlight 4 different movement profiles: "movements of proximity", "movements of environmental education", "movements of civic development"; "movements of setting of the environmental agenda". Each type of movement discloses different features: from e-democracy processes at the local level among movements’ participants, institutions and stakeholders, to networking and cooperative experiences, with an international approach.

Keywords: Environmental movements, participation, civic media, civic engagement, social media.
