Through an analysis of the Italian missionary press published in the years 1945-65, the article aims to understand how the Catholic Church and the missionary world addressed the problem of decolonization. The article focuses in particular on issues such as the fostering of the local clergy, the creation of a local episcopal hierarchy, the strategies of opposition to the Communist threat, the discomfort caused by the emergence of new – political and cultural - challenges to which many Western missionaries did not seem prepared at all.
