The article examines the latest historiography on the Italian Communist Party, in light of the political and cultural changes resulting from the end of the Cold War. The fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Pci were a watershed; thereafter, Soviet archives were partially opened and Italy’s political system went through a process of reshaping. The focus of the historiographical debate on the Pci changed as well: the traditional argument about the degree of autonomy of the Pci from the Ussr became obsolete. Consequently, recent research on this subject focuses mainly on the international context in which the party worked and takes into consideration new archival sources, with the aim of expanding the studies concerning the societal dimension of Communist militancy.
