The Author examines the problem of pontifical fiefs identification in the Milanese starting from their uncertain origin in the early Middle Ages, with the aim of explaining the reasons of this unclear legitimacy claim in the early modern period. The Author focuses on Senator Carlo Maria Maggi’s report requested by Madrid in 1678, that helps to understand why these fiefs were claimed in the context of the political contest between Spain, the Papacy and the bishops.

Keywords: Ecclesiastical and pontifical fiefs; Spanish Lombardy; Carlo Maria Maggi; Spain and Roman Holy Empire; early modern history; jurisdictional conflicts
