The essay is devoted to an exam of the best-sellers published in Italy in 2022 on the 100th Anniversary of the “March on Rome”. Written by some of the most influential Italian journalists, they show a sharp divide between public opinion and historical research. All the authors use history, of course, but (with only one exception) they select their data according to the theses they propose. Some seem to ignore recent and authoritative historiography. Others accept the factual results of historical inquiry but denounce historians' interpretative debate as useless and misleading. Others consider historical reflections on fascism as simply instrumental to manifest political motivations. Oriented to today’s political discussions, the majority of these books, instead of explaining what is possible to know about fascism, defend or contest the persisting legitimacy of anti-fascism in Italian society.
