Normative methodology has suffered from a lot of bad press recently. In this paper I defend it as a legitimate approach, and sketch a few examples of how to do it. The discussion is centred on the concept of “model of scientific method”. Its descriptive and normative functions are illustrated using the model of the perfectly controlled experiment as a paradigmatic case.
