The author explains the methodological premises and the work in progress of a research project which was born as a joint venture between the Central Archives of the State in Rome and the University of Rome "La Sapienza". The project aims at examining the relationship between women and writing over a long period of time, from the modern era to the Twentieth century. The relationship with writing is the "place of differences": while entailing a reconsideration of social roles and relations, it has also required women to acquire a new consciousness of themselves and a greater awareness of time and space. Therefore, a study of archival sources has permitted analysis of the methods and forms of women’s access to writing, by retrieving letters, diaries and memories produced by learned women as well as non-authorial writings coming from outside the lettered community.
