The article presents the DBE as a collective biography of Italian pedagogists in the last two centuries. Most entries underline their commitment not only to education, but also to other activities within the manifold fields of social life: from religion to politics to economy and science. The author illustrates some possible readings through different indicators available in the final indexes (profession, themes, places), and singles out common features among more or less known figures who worked in different historical periods and environments.
