In this article the authors outline disability in the context of the child with special care needs. They highlight how disability impacts in terms of direct and indirect costs, including social isolation, on the family. They analyse the elements that generate a balance point for the family. They define the importance of the contributions that the patient and the family can make in structuring more effective and cleare treatment pathways. They emphasise the importance of environmental factors, including cultural factors in becoming barriers or facilitators and that policies to integrate and support disability for children are an investment that affects everyone.
