Metaphor and Categorization - A tradition which starts from Aristotle, through Vico, Tesauro, up to the recent interactionist an experiential approach, highlights the significance of metaphor in cognition. The power of metaphor mainly consists in its capacity to categorize what is unknown or undetermined on the grounds of partial correspondences, similarities, and analogies, by establishing associations between different domains, and by referring to body, experience, and the world. The constitutive value of metaphor (in a way, it creates the object to which it refers by categorizing it via analogies, similarity, and extensions) has been focused upon and exemplified in a wide range of domains: typically, in science, child language, and, recently, even in legal language. Fluidity of categories and flexibility of metaphor, success and break-downs of metaphorical languages, i. e. different facets of the relationship between metaphor and categorization in children and adults, will be discussed. Keywords: Analogy, Categorization, Cognition, Embodiment, Figurative language, Metaphor.
