The author discusses how positive factors, particularly positive emotions and strengths of character, work in psychotherapy. While psychology has traditionally dealt with deficit and difficulty, positive psychology has shifted attention towards the individual qualities and strengths. Fredrickson’s research on positive emotions has also shown how the latter, contrary to what previously thought, can become a source of wellbeing and not merely a consequence of it. Then, the author describes psychotherapy approaches, of different theoretical orientation, that work in peculiar way on the elaboration of positive emotions and strengths.
