In this paper the Author focuses on the importance of the interactions between patients and analysts and of the bi-personal field in interpretations and in therapeutic transformations. Absent a clear focus on these two factors, there cannot be transformational interpretations. Many theoretical approaches are converging on this progressive awareness and can be clinically applied. From a comparison of these approaches some common points emerge that can be better understood in the light of the findings of infant research. These factors show that often interpretation is but a change in the analyst’s position vis-à-vis the patient and vice versa. It is a strategy for reaching and putting in mutual contact the respective selves of analyst and patient and helping start a self-conscious process in the patient.

Keywords: Interpretation, relational psychoanalysis, co-construction of meaning, attachment style, infant research
