The article deals with the history of tourism development in Versilia, a well-known tourism destination in Northern Tuscany. The contribution aims to investigate how tourism shaped landscape and the urban settlement of this area, while affecting its social, economical and environmental features, from the rise of seaside tourism at the beginning of the XIXth century until the spread of mass vacation in the WWII aftermath. Broadly speaking, the "touristification" of the Versilia was surprisingly neglected by scholars, who devoted few hints to this region, thus representing a growth area for tourism and urban history. Moreover, the effects of major shifts in international tourism, as well as the role played by national policy and local stakeholders, are analysed to appraise the original components of the Versilia tourism enhancement and to assess to what extent it was affected by external trends. Hence, the final goal of this contribution is to depict an overall history of tourism in Versilia, but also to provide methodological suggestions and research questions for further studies. The research is based on a wide range of sources, including unpublished Archives records, press articles, grey literature, statistical data.
