The article is a first result of a broader research on the history of the Physics community in Catania, on the identity of the individual researchers' and intellectual profiles, on the material conditions of the research in a peripheral location of the Italian University. The essay, based on an excavation of archival sources of the Historical Archive of the University of Catania and of the Central State Archive as well as of the National Research Council, focused on a chronological period limited to the two world wars to provide the essential elements on which research will develop.
