The article aims at analyzing the historical background of Russia’s explora- tion of the Arctic, the undisputed protagonist of the region’s dynamic development in recent decades. The U. Nobile’s expedition coincided in the Ussr with a period of political and economic change determined by the needs of industrialization, on the one hand, and by international system changes, on the other. Through the analysis of the media campaign carried out by the Soviet authorities in the years 1928-1929 around the rescue of the expedition of the "Italy" airship, the article analyzes the complicated background of the propaganda at the service of the Soviet regime.
