This essay analyses the formation and the conspirator activities of the first republican group led by Giuseppe Mazzini between 1823 and 1833. The young Ligurian members of the Giovine Italia shared similar experiences, such as the Carbonari’s secret affiliation and the revolutionary activities in the Giovine Italia group. Throughout Elia Benza’s individual trajectory, the author explores the characteristics of the group and its republican ideals against Piedmont’s monarchy during a decade marked by tensions and pro- tests due to the annexation of Liguria to the Kingdom of Sardinia.

Keywords: Genova, Mazzini, Risorgimento, Giovine Italia, republicanism, conspiracy.
