Industrial districts changed considerably from the early descriptions by Beccatini and colleagues, evolving in different directions. Three evolutionary trajectory can describe such a multifaceted, recent transformation: decline, hierarchization and resiliency. After a characterization of such trajectories, this article focus specifically on resiliency. Leveraging on the Riviera del Brenta footwear district and on the Montebelluna Sportsystem clusters located in Veneto region, Italy, this article discusses the determinants of the resiliency trajectories departing from the global value chain perspective, highilting the role of global lead firms and of a large base of local dynamic actors.
