The Location of Manufacturing Industry in the Italian Regions - This essay analyses the changing distribution of manufacturing industry over Italy’s twenty regions from 1971 to 2001 with the aim of verifying the intensity of factors leading to agglomeration or dispersion of these industries among different regions and groups of regions. The multiple equilibria approach frequently used in the New Economic Geography is applied to the Italian situation after a brief critical evaluation of its merits. The regions are grouped according to four patterns of equilibria stability for the purposes of examination. The result shows a long run trend for industry to move from the North-West to the North-East and South of Italy. Moreover, applying an industrial mobility indicator to the regions, the role of a special policy and of the State enterprises is seen to have been decisive in the shift of employment in large manufacturing plants from North to South.
